Santa Fe is wonderful for so many reasons, but one of my favorites is that it is full of pet lovers. So fitting that St. Francis, with his legendary love for animals, is the city’s patron Saint. With its many walking and hiking trails, Santa Fe is perfect for a Covid-safe adventure with your furry family member. With plenty of sunny, temperate days, there’s hardly a day that isn’t just right for exploring with your pet. Not only are many businesses and patios of restaurants pet friendly here, but there are also many amazing dog parks in town to expand your pets social network. What a better way to also fulfill your human need for personal interaction in a pandemic world, than visiting with like-minded people, socially distanced in the fresh air, while your pets frolic!
The Frank Ortiz dog park is an off-leash park with 138 acres of arroyos and hills, miles of trails, and some of the best views of Santa Fe. It is one of the largest parks of its kind in the United States and is not fenced-in, but dogs can roam comfortably on the trails without approaching the outer boundaries of the park.
The Santa Animal Shelter facility offers several different options for dog park activities. There is a fenced area for off-leash play for dogs of all sizes. There are areas designated specifically for small or large dogs only. There are also private-fenced areas that dogs and their humans may use privately for a specified period of time, perfect for owners with a dog pack of their own or for dogs that don’t play well with others.
The Ft. Marcy Dog Park has a fenced area for off-leash play for small dogs only. Large dogs can be walked in the open areas and on many nearby trails.
